Overview
Why Level Design in Genshin?
Genshin Impact has a lot of players. And with the recent event Mar 2022 (Divine Ingenuity) player can made their own custom dungeon and share it with other players.
So I took the liberty to use that as a training on how to create a good dungeon design in a 3rd person action game.
First Dungeon
2 Rooms dungeon. Reach goal and collect all coins.
I created this dungeon for seasoned player in genshin. But, for new player, it is also quite forgiving.
The goal is, player need to collect all coins and reach the goal within 2 minutes.
Design Techniques
Leading with Positive Reinforcement
One of the objective in this dungeon is to collect all coins. So I put some coins on player starting position right in front of them, to guide the player to the correct path.
I also used this technique in area 1 to show player where the Goal is, and where they should go. Also I didn't place any coin on area where I didn't want the player to go.
In room 2, I put power up and align them back to room 1. So player will know that they need to go back in order to finish the dungeon.
Funnel Before Reveal
On the starting area, I created a funnel that leads to a stairway which then from top of it, player can see whole area 1 layout and information. This is crucial step, because I want the player to know where they are, where they should be going, and if they fail, how they could recover.
Teasing with Incompleteness
On the first room, I put an Electric butterflies (image left) alone without Electrogranum Source (Image Right). This will give player motivation to find the electrogranum source. (Which is located in the second room)
Also because the Goal is located in high place on first room, player should automatically connect the dots. This is why I design this for a seasoned player, since only a seasoned player will know this mechanic, and those player already know the characteristic in Genshin dungeon, which is they need to explore. Doesn't mean new player can't finish this dungeon, but it might be harder for them since they need to understand the mechanic quite well.
Fun Activity for Refresher
As the dungeon is time limited and quite challenging, I put some refreshment on Room 2. I put a speed up area, and arrange the coin so it is easy and fun to gather them. This to give Fun factor and refresh player mind so they would ready for the next incoming challenge. Also to complete the dungeon they need to collect all coins. 2 Bird 1 stone.
